Rosie Perez
Rosie Perez, born Rosa Maria Perez, September 6 1964, is an American actress and choreographer. Her breakthrough came with her role as Tina in the film Do the Right Thing (1989), then followed by White Men Can't Jump (1992). Perez's performance in Fearless (1993), won her an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. Her starring film roles since include It Could Happen to You (1994), The Road to El Dorado (2000), Pineapple Express (2008) as well as Birds of Prey (2020).
Perez was awarded three Primetime Emmy Award nominations (in 1990-1994) and an additional Emmy Award nomination for her role as The Flight Attendant (2020-2024). Perez has appeared in Broadway stage plays such as The Ritz and Frankie, Johnny in the Clair de Lune and Fish in the Dark. In the 18th season of the show she also was the co-host of ABC's talk show The View.
Early life
Perez was born on September 6 1964 in the Bushwick neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York City She was the daughter of Lydia Perez and Ismael Serrano an ocean-going merchant mariner. Perez's mother Lydia Fontanez and Reyes was born in Humacao (Puerto Rico) on the 13th of October 1939. Her father was originally from Aguadilla (Puerto Rico). Arturo Perez was her mother's 20-year-old husband. After an affair with Serrano her mother was already had five children. Perez was born in the now closed Greenpoint Hospital located in the Greenpoint neighborhood of Brooklyn.
Perez is among the ten kids her mother borne. Rosie as well as her siblings were raised in Bushwick when their mother was frequently in jail. While in prison her mother gave birth to her youngest daughter. After being raised by an aunt, she was put in foster care and group homes. It was not uncommon for her to be separated from her siblings. She was placed in the group foster home and lived in foster care in New York and Peekskill until age eight. At the age of twelve her legal status was that of an ward in New York. Her aunt and mother regularly visited her, as did her father had a few times tried to take custody of her.
